"... engineers have provided admirable sonics ... pleasingly performed and well recorded ... a worthwhile addition to Finzi’s discography."
- MusicWeb International
"... Gilchrist brings musical authority and emotional maturity to bear ... his impassioned eloquence is matched by David Hill’s flexible conducting and really fine playing from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Finzi newcomers should start by sampling the first of the Two Sonnets and prepare to be hooked by this truly outstanding album."
- Classic FM
This is the second volume of acclaimed Finzi recordings by English tenor James Gilchrist and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra under David Hill. Quintessentially Finzi, the tender yet radiant Dies natalis is a setting of 17th century texts depicting both the first sensations of a newborn baby and life’s tarnishing of the innocence of childhood. In Farewell to Arms, a further example of Finzi’s enthusiasm for 17th century poets, the measured bass and the tenor’s sad, arching melody become a poignant symbol for the brevity of life.
