Erna Rot's songs to German texts channel not just jazz but also pop, chanson, bluegrass and swing. And what's different about them is that they don't lull the listener, they positively bounce into the ear and stay fixed in the mind.
Erna Rot especially likes two English words to which she has dedicated an entire album. Not without reason, do they merge German with English and Erna Rot with jazz and chanson. Angst & Weltschmerz, the ACT-debut of the Berlin-born singer-songwriter, combines sounds that seem to come from the deepest shores of the American southern states with European songwriting traditions. But what makes this album so special are the lyrics: melancholy, serious songs of loss and forgiveness, and gently hovering songs about the heaviness of life, facilitated by everyday encounters. Weird lyrics about strange figures complete a lyrical Gesamtkunstwerk, which is rarely found in the German language - certainly not in jazz.
Angst & Weltschmerz is not superficial, sometimes even angular and edgy, with garnished crank-curious texts. An album that can be amused, irritated and swallowed. Today's life may be hard, the stress of everyday life immense, the fear of death and illness omnipresent. But in the end it is the art that makes us survive.
