In FM!, the new album from Long Beach rap artist Vince Staples - released this week with little warning - he calls it a 22-minute project with "[n]o concepts, no elaborate schemes, just music. Because nowadays," he concludes, "who needs more bulls***?"
This is a decidedly Vince Staples statement, brash, to-the-point, and - above all - ironic. What follows is an album thick with the comic nihilism that Staples has become known for, and a fitting critique on the consumption of black violence and disenchantment - 30 years after the debut of NWA's Straight Outta Compton.
