"... a modern jazz classic ... scintillates with post bop energy ... every tune is a winner ..."
- Stereophile
"... a colossal achievement from a man still just 24 years old."
- The Penguin Guide to Jazz
"... a landmark of the Blue Note sound ... (the title track) remains Herbie Hancock's finest composition ... the texture and ambiance of the music envelops the listener ... one of the high points of 1960s jazz."
- Jazz.com
Herbie Hancock's epic fifth album, a programmatic evocation of the sea, is remarkable for its effortless blending of modality and hard bop. Hancock is backed by Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass and drummer Tony Williams on this 1966 release, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
