"Moanin' is one of the most influential and important hard bop albums due to its outstanding compositions, arrangements and personnel."
- All About Jazz
Drummer Art Blakey founded the Jazz Messengers to both inspire and mentor young jazz players, as well as to keep Blakey inspired and full of new ideas. The quintet on this album consisted of Blakey on drums, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, bassist Jymie Merritt and pianist Bobby Timmons. Veteran jazz writer Dan Ouellette says this album "stands as one of jazz’s all-time recordings, largely because of its tunes." Includes the biggest hit of Blakey's long career, the title track Moanin' which was composed by then 22-year-old pianist Timmons.
“I’m gonna stay with the youngsters. When these get too old I’ll get some younger ones. Keeps the mind active.”
