In addition to being one of Norway’s most sought-after ensembles, the Engegård Quartet has set itself an ambitious goal: to record all of Mozart’s string quartets on CD. The first album, featuring Mozart’s last three quartets (nicknamed “Prussian”) was released in 2017 on the LAWO Classics label (LWC1123), and now the time has finally arrived for album no. 2 in the series. On this recording we hear three of the six quartets that Mozart dedicated to his good friend Haydn: K. 421 in D minor; K. 428 in E-flat major; and K. 465 in C major. As composer in his time, Mozart was in a class of his own. One of the very few whom the young Mozart regarded as his equal and with whom he felt he could share his thoughts and musical ideas was Joseph Haydn, who was 24 years his senior. Although these two titans did not meet so very often, they had a most unique association. After having studied Haydn’s string quartets with care and admiration, Mozart himself wrote a set of six string quartets in 1783, which he dedicated to his good friend and source of inspiration. And Haydn, after he had heard these quartets, uttered the famous words to Mozart’s father: “Before God and as an honest man I tell you that your son is the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name. He has taste, and, what is more, the most profound knowledge of composition.” Mozart is a composer with whom the Engegård Quartet has a very special relationship. Three members of the quartet have studied and worked in Salzburg, Mozart’s place of birth, and as a quartet they have explored and played his music frequently over many years. Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2006, the Engegård Quartet has rapidly become one of Norway’s most sought-after ensembles. The quartet, known for its bold, fresh interpretations of the classical repertoire, has attracted international acclaim and performs both in Norway and abroad.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
