“All these qualities are conveyed by orchestra and conductor in a way that tells you that true virtuosity is achieved through discipline rather than a more generalised and garish drama.”
- Gramophone

“Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic, faced with so much in-and-out material, wisely refuse to turbocharge the idiom and risk melodrama. Instead, their relatively restrained approach conjures an appropriate set of mellow, mid-19th century orchestral colours, while generating pace and excitement where the music permits.”
- BBC Music Magazine

“The extraordinarily high technical values attendant on the recording reveal myriad details of gesture, colour and texture that have simply been inaudible heretofore. The beautifully blended sound of the BBC ensemble is nothing less than a sensual delight. Ultimately these are strikingly imaginative interpretations of what is, after all, the most important and influential body of European orchestral music composed during the 1850s. Very highly recommended.”
- International Record Review

Liszt was the father of the symphonic poem, a quintessentially Romantic genre which grew out of the concert overtures of composers such as Beethoven. This release is the fourth in Italian conductor Gianandreas Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra’s series on Liszt's groundbreaking contributions to this form, and includes Hungaria, Hunnenschlacht, Die Ideale, and the highlight Hamlet, all written between 1854 and 1858 when the composer was Kapellmeister at Weimar.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!

Software for Mac OS X

  • iTunes : plays AIFF, it's free and you probably have it already!
  • Audirvana : plays both AIFF and FLAC formats, $50 but has a free trial period

Software for Windows

  • iTunes : plays AIFF, it's free and you probably have it already!
  • JRiver : plays both AIFF and FLAC formats, $50 but has a free trial period
