UK Albums Chart - #3,1991
Billboard 200 - #13, 1991
"... a surprising return to form ... (Petty) has never sounded fresher or more pleased with what he’s singing ... B+."
- Entertainment Weekly
"
... the Wilbury vibe prevails. Reflective in tone and smooth in texture ... it's Petty's regained focus as a songwriter that keeps things afloat ... by turns heartfelt and humorous, scathing and sympathetic."
- Los Angeles Times
"Four Stars ... thoroughly compelling ... in its best moments, sounds like a cross between Full Moon Fever and Damn The Torpedoes and features the most focused and resonant lyrics Petty has ever written ... employing spare, deceptively simple rhymes in attractive pop settings ..."
- Rolling Stone
Tom Petty continues his association with fellow Wilbury Jeff Lynne on this release, the follow-up to Petty's hugely-successful solo album Full Moon Fever. Lynne co-produced with Petty and guitarist Mike Campbell; he also co-wrote most of the songs with Petty and can be heard playing and singing. The synergy led to another major hit for Petty and The Heartbreakers, a top 20 album with US sales surpassing two million copies.
