"A los Ancestros is a record of contemporary Cuban music that melds popular beats and poetry, allowing me to thank our forefathers for the majestic and extraordinary musical heritage they have passed on to us. Thanks to Spain, and to the magnificent Andalusian period in which Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together for almost eight centuries. Thanks to black Africa and the rhythmic treasure of its Yoruba, Mandinga, Bantu and Arara peoples. Thanks to the French for introducing English country-dance in Santiago de Cuba, to the Italians for influencing us with the Neapolitan operas that passed through Havana. Thanks to the Americas for jazz and swing. This musical work is the fruit of many years of study and research, leading me to discover the deepest roots of Cuban music. Because of this project, I have had the pleasure of traveling through time and perusing the history of musical instruments, traditional forms of dance, and my forefathers’ spices and customs.
