Keith Jarrett and his American Quartet recorded this material in 1976, one of their last sessions together. The music from the session was released on this album and its successor, Bop-Be, both issued in 1977. The quartet includes Dewey Redman on tenor sax, Charlie Haden on bass and drummer Paul Motian, with Motian writing almost the entire album himself.
