Vara is off to a strong start with his debut EP, Have You Ever Seen A Boy Break Down? — an apt title given the emotionality of the songs. With his glowing blond hair and voluble, outgoing personality, Carlos Vara does not come across as someone who struggles with insecurity. But his music — soul-powered songs about self-doubt, loneliness, and thwarted romantic love — belies his cheerful exterior.
“The title track is about being mad, hurt, frustrated, and losing my mind, but feeling almost too aware of my own emotions. A lot of my music has been inspired by the pain I’ve felt the past few years. When I wrote the song, displaying my brokenness in my music was the first time I felt recognized as a person and people were actually listening to me and saying they were proud of me. So I pictured myself standing in the middle of a circus ring losing my shit and throwing things while everyone around me was clapping.”
