Gabriela Montero's long awaited debut orchestral debut honours the classical traditions of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total work of art) as it provides an intimate portrait of the total artist as pianist, composer, improviser and social commentator. In addition to the beloved Rachmaninov concerto and three spontaneously-composed and recorded improvisations, the album features her own work for piano and orchestra, Ex Patria, dedicated to the 19,336 victims of homicide in Venezuela. The piece is an unapologetic musical commentary on Venezuela today, ravaged by violent crime, corruption and economic collapse.
