"Christophers favours a conservative, English approach to his Messiah and he makes an effort to achieve his sonic goals. His direction here is as convincing as his soloists and chorus, who collectively imbue the performance with a state of grace found lacking in many contemporary period instrument accounts. This is as good as one could possible want of a Messiah performance."

This release was timed expressly to celebrate the Bicentennial of the Handel and Haydn Society, a professional chorus and period instrument orchestra founded in Boston in 1815. This is the society's first recording of Handel’s powerful oratorio under the direction of Artistic Director Harry Christophers, recorded live at Symphony Hall in November 2013.
