Spanish cellist Josetxu Obregón and his ensemble La Ritirata shed light on the history of 18th century cello music and performance in Spain. The programme provides a sample of pieces which undoubtedly would have been heard in Spain during the infancy of the instrument there and in the period leading into the Age of the Enlightenment. Many of these works are being recorded for the first time, including a new reading of Boccherini’s evocative Fandango, drawn from the Guitar Quintet No. 4, complete with castanets.
