Kat Edmonson has a story to tell. It’s a story for all those who dream of a different path in life, and you can hear it on her 2020 recording Dreamers Do. The album explores the shared human struggle around daring to dream and it illuminates a range of emotional and psychological consequences that can happen along the way. The story of Dreamers Do unfolds during the course of one sleepless night. The album begins with a promising invitation to settle in for the night and to dream (“Go to Sleep”). Joy and magic are revealed (“In a World of My Own”), but soon a left turn is taken (“When You Wish Upon a Star”), and a wild night ensues. At the heart of the story, Kat’s vulnerable original, “Too Late to Dream” poses the central question: “Are the messages we receive as children about following our dreams sustainable or relevant through adult life?” Dreamers Do is a mix of Edmonson’s original songs and re-imagined American Songbook standards (many of them mid-20th century Disney songs) arranged in Kat’s trademark vintage-pop, jazz, and chamber-pop style. Her musical influences on this recording are drawn from Africa, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Europe, and early to mid-century America. Instruments featured on Dreamers Do include kora (West African harp), tabla, steel pan, erhu & pipa (Chinese string instruments), harp, theremin, celeste, polyphonic synthesized sounds, piano, organ, acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, drums, a multitude of percussion, strings, woodwinds, and voices.
