"The alt-country singer-songwriter’s new album moves steadily and carefully, lingering on the conflicted emotions of his finely-etched tales and the band’s textured, elegant understatement."
- Pitchfork
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit release their sixth album, Reunions, a stirring Americana offering from the great singer-songwriter and his faithful ensemble, which finds the group once again partnering with producer Dave Cobb. The ten-track release features collaborations with David Crosby and Jay Buchanan, of the Grammy-nominated rock & roll band Rival Sons.
Isbell notes the prescience of the songs, though they were written long before the emergency state brought on by COVID-19. The songs are informed by the crisis-like state of America that had already existed.
“It wasn’t like we were cruising along, and everything was great, and then this virus hit, and our country was shut down. We were a disaster, and the virus hit, and I was writing about the fact that we were a disaster. I think that really, to me, means that, had the virus not come along, the songs would have meant the same thing to the people who were paying attention. Now there’s just more people who are forced to pay attention to the fact that we have a whole lot of cracks in the sidewalks.”
