This late 70s recording of the prodigious bebop trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie shows him at the height of his powers, with a refined wisdom to his playing after decades in the business. Featured here are some of Dizzy's most celebrated tunes, into the wildly popular "Night In Tunisia". This recording is taken from the legendary Hamburg music hall, Onkel Pö. After opening in October 1970, it became on the the venues for Jazz in Europe, participating in the New Jazz Festival at Hamburg. Among the jazz musicians who played at Onkel Pö were John Abercrombie, Chet Baker, Art Blakey, Carla Bley, Joanne Brackeen, Dollar Brand, Michael Brecker, Gary Burton, Don Cherry, Chick Corea, Gil Evans, Jan Garbarek, Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Goodman, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Haden, Louis Hayes, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Leo Kottke, Steve Kuhn, Dave Liebman, Michael Mantler, Pat Metheny, Alphonse Mouzon, Marvin "Hannibal" Peterson, Tom Shaka, Woody Shaw, Archie Shepp, Horace Silver, Ralph Towner, Bennie Wallace, Mike Westbrook, Yōsuke Yamashita, and Attila Zoller. Al Jarreau and Helen Schneider started their international careers there.
