Ludwig van Beethoven's music is the epitome of western classical music. It stands like a monument at the beginning of the post-revolutionary bourgeois age and also seems to be firmly rooted in this era. But Beethoven was also on the search for spirituality, for the search for meaning, for the universal - in the writings of oriental religions as well as when composing.
The pianist Shani Diluka traces this connection with her project Cosmos. The album contrasts two piano sonatas by the 2020 jubilee Indian Ragas - played by Mehboob Nadeem (sitar) and Mitel Purohit (tabla), who also include Beethoven's themes in their improvisations. The result is a west-east dialogue that has never been seen before.
