This Naxos release presents two ballet suites by the Soviet-era Azerbaijani composer Kara Karayev, a student of Shostakovich at the Moscow Conservatory in the 1940s. With elements of Khachaturian to them, The Seven Beauties and The Path of Thunder are energetic, at times lyrical, and thoroughly enjoyable works from a composer little known in the West.
