German Romantic pianist and Beethoven specialist, Elly Ney, joins the legendary German cellist Ludwig Hoelscher to form a duo of Classical music royalty for this stunning legacy recording of Beethoven's Sonatas and Variations for Cello and Piano. Beethoven was the first great composer of cello sonatas. In the early 19th century, sonatas for piano and instrument were usually advertised as piano sonatas with instrumental accompaniment. The cello sonata was especially so plagued, as it grew out of sonatas for continuo; as late as the beginning of the 19th century it was still common for the cello in cello sonatas to double the left hand of the piano part, with the piano right hand playing obbligato figurations and melodies. Beethoven, indeed, is credited with composing one of the first cello sonatas with a written-out piano part. This programme presents Beethoven's great works in incredible form by two experts – a reference for all.

What is High-Resolution Audio?

High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters — exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them — for download, directly to you.

What do I need for playback?

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it!
