Chamber ensemble Spectrum Concerts Berlin presents this live recording of an Arensky recital given in Berlin in April 2014, highlighting the composer's flair and range of influences. The Piano Quintet draws on Brahms and Mendelssohn for its sweeping themes and sparkling wit, while his String Quartet No. 2 was written in memory of Tchaikovsky and is a tender, elegiac work unusual in its scoring with two cellos. Dedicated to Arensky s cellist friend Karl Davidoff, the Piano Trio No. 1 is also a wonderfully heartfelt and virtuosic masterpiece.
