In anticipation of Friedrich Gulda's 90th birthday, Deutsche Grammophon is relaunching a classic: this Mozart recording has been remixed and remastered using the original multi-track tapes. Friedrich Gulda was connected to Mozart like no other composer. For him, Mozart was “the master of all masters”. There were striking parallels between the pianist and the Salzburg composer: both were celebrated as child prodigies, both were talented improvisers and both provoked with cheeky humor.
The recording with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Claudio Abbado, between 1974 and 1975, is one of the great Mozart recordings and is undoubtedly one of the highlights of Guldas and Abbado's discography.
