"The programme has been thoughtfully chosen ... (provides) contrasts between the perky Poulenc and the one who could cosset himself in his luxuriantly purple harmonies. The range of voices and the different vocal timbres have likewise been shrewdly deployed."
- Gramophone
This is the fourth release in a series of the complete songs of Francis Poulenc, performed by some of the greatest singers of the day and accompanied by exceptional Scottish pianist Malcolm Martineau. Having composed more than 150 works for piano and voice over a period of 44 years, Poulenc's songs remain consistently popular the world over. Varying in their individual style and character in a way that defies generalization, he set music to a wide range of French poetry, both ancient and modern, from the serious to the surreal.
