"... a delight from start to finish. The three wind concertos by Blake all make for highly enjoyable listening while the Serenade for Wind Octet is equally attractive and no mere filler."
- MusicWeb International
"... a splendid introduction to the more seriously intended work of a composer ... Blake’s musical language is fluently, exclusively tonal and intensively melodic ... the performance is delightful and the recording quality is very good indeed, perfectly balanced throughout. A most attractive and valuable issue."
- International Record Review
This release of world premiere recordings brings together the highly talented pianist, conductor and composer Howard Blake and renowned conductor Sir Neville Marriner. Blake, a leading figure on the contemporary music scene, happens to share the same barber in London as conductor Mariner; it was that barber who established the connection that finally led to this recording, hence the punny title of the album. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields are worthy accompanists; flautist Jaime Martin, clarinettist Andrew Marriner (son of the conductor) and bassoonist Gustavo Núñez are also heard on these superlative wind concertos.
