"... a spacious account, with an expansive and lovely slow movement and a rapturous conclusion ..."
- BBC Music Magazine
"... Tilson Thomas tackles the recitatives with a mix of spontaneity and fine tailoring and lets the ensuing melody take its sublime course. The entry of the voices adds an appropriate dimension of drama but the overall impression is of a performance perfectly sound in its reasoning, with orchestra, chorus and soloists well prepared and alert to their expressive and technical responsibilities ..."
- Gramophone
"This is Beethoven that energizes but doesn’t exhaust ... the chorus has been superbly prepared ... production is state-of-the-art ... a fairly close up sonic perspective assures zero audience noise until the ovation at the end. But there is still a pleasing openness and spaciousness. The engineers have done their job to let an extraordinary performance make it intact to your listening room, car, or headphones. Don’t hesitate on this one."
- Fanfare
Following a highly-acclaimed, multiple-Grammy-winning complete series of Mahler symphonies recorded over nine years, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony next turned their attention to Beethoven, with this volume in the series featuring the composer's monumental, final Ninth Symphony. Recorded live in June 2012, the performance is graced by the Grammy-winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus and several soloists.
