"... (Eisenstadt’s) perpetually building new ensembles to suit the variety of music he hears in his head ..."
- The Village Voice
"Pure magic ... a rare compositional talent."
- All About Jazz
"A venturesome drummer and composer, Eisenstadt likes to walk the line between freeform exploration and meticulous composition. He leads this texture-rich new ensemble ..."
- The New York Times
"... adheres to Eisenstadt’s time-tested template for mixing through composition with thoughtful but lively improvisation, in a way that is both mannered and full of surprises ... one of the beauties is that you can absorb whatever portion suits your attention span ... you can duck in for the simple pleasure of hearing the momentary exchanges or passages as easily as channel surfing ... there are miniature keepsakes galore as these four musicians weave in and out of Eisenstadt’s charts."
- Wondering Sound
Toronto born, New York-based drummer Harris Eisenstadt adds some unique flavour to his his impressive list of projects with this intriguing bicoastal quartet on his 15th album as leader since 2001. Golden State continues his career-long interest in writing for orchestral instruments in chamber and improvising contexts, however unlike his previous recordings this is a collection of short compositions rather than one or two long-form pieces. Joining Eisenstadt in Golden State is flutist Nicole Mitchell, bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and Mark Dresser on contrabass.
