"... ranks with some of (Coltrane's) best work ... Burrell's guitar work is exceptional."
- Billboard
"... we should be glad we have this session as an example of what can happen when these two great minds came together."
- All About Jazz
This historic 1958 session, not released until 1963, teams up John Coltrane with guitarist Kenny Burrell, the only guitarist Coltrane would record with after his rise to prominence. The two headliners are joined by the superb rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Flanagan contributes two songs and Chambers has one tune on this album that's part hard bop, part blowing session and part tuneful bebop. Of note is the musical "dialogue" between Coltrane's tenor and Burrell's guitar on Why Was I Born?, the only duo recording Coltrane ever attempted with a chordal instrument.
