Sibelius' first Symphony illustrates the composer's strong grasp of classical form. Tchaikovsky perhaps unsurprisingly is the composer who exerts the greatest influence over proceedings but nevertheless the style we know as 'Sibelian' is ever present. The Third from 1907 represents a sea change from the expansive earlier Symphonies: three movements, tightly argued with not a superfluous note - the intellectual rigour is similar to that of Beethoven. The third saw Sibelius pushing the boundaries of the 'classical' symphony structure.
