"... enough memorable moments came from the session to make this a very worthwhile LP ... a classic performance that should be in any thoughtful collector’s library."
- DownBeat
"... this disc's title could hardly be more accurate ... the music is unquestionably excellent, yielding sterling and signature input from each participant ... the results are significant and timeless."
- All About Jazz
For once, album title hyperbole is understatement. Here are three of the four tunes recorded at the legendary December 1954 gathering of Miles Davis, Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke. The Man I Love is heard in two exceptional and different takes, Monk reprises Bemsha Swing from his trio sessions and Davis makes one of his earliest statements in the realm of scales and modes with Swing Spring. Completing the programme, the classic 1956 Miles Davis Quintet performs a signature arrangement that was among the first to announce the arrival of John Coltrane: 'Round Midnight.
