Then Still is the debut album of jazz pianist/composer Elizabeth Walker, who penned the eleven songs featured here. Recorded at Hallibakken Studio in Hallingdal, Norway, this duo recording also features the eminent Norwegian bassist Terje Gewelt.
Walker, originally from Ohio, USA, earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1986 and has lived in Norway since 1989. Throughout the 1990’s she worked as a solo pianist, taught and played in various bands, including the jazz trio “Girl Talk” with Bodil Niska and Tine Asmundsen. They released the critically acclaimed CD Talkin’ Jazz in 1996 and played throughout Norway, on radio and TV and also internationally.
A recent move to the beautiful valley of Hallingdal after many years in Oslo has given her the time and peace of mind to work on her own music again. The unusual stillness of the summer of 2020 brought to mind a song she had written back in Boston in 1988, Then Still. Working around this theme, she chose the intimate setting of piano and bass to create the relaxed and reflective atmosphere that perfectly captures the essence of her music. Gewelt’s beautiful, warm tone and superb time feel add the necessary depth to complete the picture. We hope you find this music to be a fresh and unique listening experience.
