A versatile performer, Yi-Lan Niu presents a wide range of vocal music from Renaissance lute songs by John Dowland to the contemporary, minimalistic music of Steve Reich. Niu’s recent engagements include a 2018 solo recital with organist Professor John Chappel Stowe from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and two world-premiere concerts with the award-winning composers John Hennecken and Ms. Shing-Ying Lin in 2020. Her new vocal album, Chanter et Souffrir Mélodies by Charles Gounod, has now been released by Centaur Records internationally.
"The music is about struggling and how we can use our faith to coexist with our struggle, because we can never not struggle, because that wouldn't be life and there wouldn't be learning involved... We coexist and learn with struggles. [Gounod's] life was full of this struggle and recovery with this struggle, the very last piece, called 'Redemption', showcases that."
