On Moods and Sketches, Italian composer Sebastiano Meloni presents 12 entirely improvised works for piano, all performed on a Fazioli grand piano F278. Each piece examines the different facets of improvisational language and has a specific methodical theme. Transparencies, for example, is an exploration of space and time, where the piano is divided into its three registers, each moving at a different pace, sometimes blurred and at other times blended into a single melodic voice. Point Particle is seemingly a string of consciousness with a pseudo-circular form. Absence is the most rhythmically consistent piece on the album; a dominating gentle rhythmic groove pattern upon which the composer develops melodic ideas.
“My music is completely improvised ... I am not interested in any kind of meaning apart from that which can be derived from musical expression. I try to uncover what music can express in itself, as well as the emotions we could convey with atonal free improvisations. I often decide which forms, sounds, timbres, or registers I am going to explore ahead of time. My purpose is to make atonal improvisation a compositional language, which means strict rules and attention to form. At the same time, I seek to preserve the inherent joy in the musical discovery that comes with instantaneous composition."
