"... this is a trio that can swing with the best of them and approaches the material with no short supply instrumental prowess ... this trio never loses sight of a song's framework. Freedom need not imply the abandonment of pulse, melody or harmony, a concept made abundantly clear in the climactic closer ... a 15-minute, gospel-tinged version of God Bless The Child that grooves hard ... makes clear that, a quarter century since inception, this trio and its paradoxically specific yet wide-reaching concept has by no means overstayed its welcome."
- All About Jazz
"... the recordings are undeniably beautiful, particularly the singing ballads such as It Never Entered My Mind ... the powerful low sound of Peacock, combined with DeJohnette’s masterfully architectural drumming, elevates the pianist as well as his own accompaniment ever did ... rather than having the chords of these standards confine him, Jarrett uses the clarity of his accompaniment to allow him to seek even greater momentum toward improvisation ... fans of Jarrett, like myself, will always hear these records as having a fresh immediacy: a sense of a great musician discovering a new part of his talent ..."
