Although she was only 22 years old when this sophomore album was released in 2005, Danish vocalist Malene Mortensen sings with stirring intensity. At 19 she won the Danish Eurovision Song Contest, but her talent reaches far beyond such contexts. Her rich voice and mature phrasing seem born to caress classic jazz songs, which is exactly what she does on Date With A Dream. In addition to the classic covers, the album also includes several of her fine original tunes, all recorded with another young, exceptional talent, pianist Kasper Villaume, who also produced. The rest of the band is made up by brilliant bassist Avishai Cohen (Chick Corea) and drummer Morten Lund. Some tunes are adorned with tasteful string quartet arrangements, others with discreet brass.
