"... the power pair of Jessy Wilson and Kallie North show it isn't only a boys club. With North's porch-side Mississippi roots and Wilson's asphalt Brooklyn breeding, they bring a sound that melds city grit and Delta dirt ..."
- Rolling Stone
"Roots-rock uplift is the mission for Muddy Magnolias ... merges soul and country on a shared foundation of gospel and blues. The women harmonize and take turns pushing one another as they sing about trouble and hope, love and compassion, both personal and public-spirited ... as the songs build up until they all but demand singalongs."
- The New York Times
"... a funky hybrid of traditional soul and countrified rock. Jessy Wilson has the soul of Mavis Staples and the range of Nina Simone, while Kallie North brings her Mississippi roots to the forefront with a sweet, honeyed texture. While the delivery may go down smooth, North has the verve and passion of Joplin, with a bit of her mischievousness ... bravo ladies!"
- SPIN
The debut release from soul-country-rock duo the Muddy Magnolias showcases a confluence of style and sound as colourful as it is unlikely, steeped in a river of influence yet bracingly fresh. On Broken People, Jessy Wilson and Kallie North combine poetic imagery and vocal passion, with the musicianship and production of Motown or Muscle Shoals by way of the raw honesty of Sun Records. Of course songs deal with love, longed for and unleashed, but the album soars as it reaches for bigger themes: the need for hope, for love on a societal scale and optimism for the future.
"The spirit of the Muddy Magnolias existed from the moment we met, but we didn’t know we were the Muddy Magnolias yet ... we spent a whole year writing, trying to understand what our message was when we combined our stories ..."
- Jessy Wilson
